Yoga has become increasingly popular in recent years, with people of all ages and backgrounds seeking its numerous benefits, such as reduced stress and anxiety, increased flexibility and strength, and improved overall health.

But what is the essence of yoga, and its ultimate goal?

In this episode of Breaking Trail, Balakhilya shares his journey towards discovering his true self and finding true happiness through Bhakti yoga. Or more specifically, how he met his spiritual guide and how that changed his entire perspective on life.

You’ll hear us discuss the importance of having an active relationship with the Supreme Soul, and how that differs from the impersonalist teachings that are often mistaken to be the final word of yoga. We delve into the roots and history of yoga, how it became popular in the West, and look at some of its many benefits.

Additionally, we discuss Jesus and his role as a perfect yogi and how following his teachings can lead to a joyful life.

Highlights:

  • (6:23) Yoga originates from Vedic teachings and has been around since the beginning of creation, as stated in the Bhagavad-gita. Yoga became popular in the West during the late 60s/early 70s with the rise of the hippie movement.
  • (23:27) Balakhilya’s spiritual journey meeting his spiritual guide: he was introduced to chanting and Bhakti yoga, which corrected his misconceptions and changed his outlook.
  • (33:47) Balakhilya had an enlightenment about being God, but was corrected by his spiritual guide who taught him about a higher truth, namely having a loving relationship with the Supreme Soul.
  • (39:41) The message of the material world is ever-present, but studying scriptures can provide the truth about the real essence of life
  • (57:43) Yoga means linking or union, specifically between the individual soul and the Supreme Soul. It involves harmonizing one’s will with and having desire to please the Supreme Person, leading to a perfect relationship. Work needs to be done on our side to reach that perfection.
  • (1:02:24) The soul’s true essence is the need for love, care, and protection. A vague concept of “energy” by itself cannot fullfill this need, but a perfect and fully satisfying relationship is required, based on devotion.
  • (1:09:47) We reflect on the importance of humility in yoga and reference Lord Jesus Christ as an example of a perfect yogi.
